WHAT ARE WE GONNA CHANT IN MY COUNTRY......?

Black men being killed due to racial prejudice in the US of A, and people of all colours are out on the streets chanting “Black Lives Matter”.

What are we gonna chant in my country......?

What are we gonna chant, when he gets shot by yet another maniacal trigger-orgasmic officer who most definitely is as black as him?.... “Every Life Matters”?.

What are we gonna chant, when it was that uncle we trusted with our little girl that defiled her and left her scarred for life?.... “Her Soul Matters”?.

What are we gonna chant, when our own leaders have continuously refused to finance and equip hospitals, and our people keep dying very avoidable deaths?.... “Our Health Matters”?.

What are we gonna chant, as it continues to be a very small population controlling all of the nation's wealth and the poor masses go to bed hungry without any assurance of a meal the next day?.... “Every Stomach Matters”?.

What are we gonna chant, when the government does not care if that child goes to school or hawks fruits all day?.... “Their Future Matters”?.

What are we gonna chant, when those we elected to represent us keep diverting funds meant for the development of our constitutencies into their own pockets?.... “Every Community Matters”?.

What are we gonna chant, when our brothers fighting for our country are slain in cold blood by insurgents, because they were forced to the war fronts without being adequately armed?.... “Soldiers' Lives Matter”?.

What are we gonna chant, when it was those same demonic masked men from the neighbouring town that invaded our village, destroyed properties and took away our mothers and sisters, but the rest of the country chose to say nothing about it?.... “Other Lives Matter”?.

What are we gonna chant, when we are faced again with another one of the thousands of daily horrible events that do not even make “Breaking News” any longer?!!.

I sincerely am in solidarity with our black brothers in the western world, as they lead the fight against injustice that we all are susceptible to because of the colour of our skin, but shame on you if you are a Nigerian in Nigeria and you are more bothered about the problem in the USA than the myriad issues in your own country!. If you and I do not speak up for our own country, nobody will do it for us!.

The situation in our country is currently so bad that if we were all offered an express visa straight to the middle of the US crisis and the unyielding pandemic, majority of us will take it and never look back.

Gbenga read this article up to this point, and here goes his comment; “so if everybody collects the visa and leaves, who will stay back and help build the country?. Well, me I'll only be curiously asking this question as I drag all my life's properties in my suitcase to the airport so I can hop on that plane”. Funny yeah?, but this is the stage we are as a nation.

Chinua Achebe once said, “being a Nigerian is abysmally frustrating and unbelievably exciting”. Permit me to reiterate and rephrase the words of TwitterNG's @kim_amaka that “the excitement has ended, and only frustration is left”.

When are we the people going to stand up for ourselves?. When are we the people going to do beyond typing and trending hashtags?. When are we the people going to stop frustrating the efforts of the very few who stand up for us by questioning their choice of words and calling them rude?. When are we the people going to stop worshipping and enabling our enemies at the helms of affairs?. When are we the people going to stop fueling our own problems?.

Well, as is our usual custom, maybe we'll just resort to the regular #PrayForNigeria call, but if prayers and our religiosity alone could drag us out of this decades old mess, we would have achieved Vision 2020 back in 2013.
