DEGREE OR BUSINESS? π€
Hello. It's been a while π Let's pick up from where we started. Today's topic will be different, we won't need to drag anyone π
When you hear Education or Business/Degree or Connection, what comes to your mind?π€
Okay. Let me use this opportunity to tell us something I did and took delight in. While I was doing my second teaching practice, I had at least 40 students in my class. At least, I knew 30 of them by name but I couldn't connect with them all. They were all in Jss3. Do you know the funniest thing? Some of them were already richer than I am, If I was for sale, they would buy me - at Jss3 πΆπΆ
So, on this particular day, I noticed that most of them were engrossed in this slang "Las las, school na scam." They didn't believe in school anymore because the government didn't even give a fuck about them. If you decide not to come again, only your classmates will miss you, not even the school. So, I went to class that day and wrote on the board "B.Sc or Business?" π At first, I didn't get their attention, but I told them what I was about to tell them would help because many of them were lost, I turned my own class to another thing.
The first question I asked them was "Who believes that school is a scam?" They all started shouting that me, me, and me. I said to them "then why are you here?" Some said because home is boring, my parents want me to study because education is free. I was impressed with their responses because it seems that none of them wanted to be here. Then I told them "do you know that if you don't come to school or you are not here with us today, you can still work and have a lot of money than those in school?" They nodded in agreement.
The first rule of trying to help someone's career path is that you should make sure what you are saying is part of your experience. Please, this is not aspire to perspire stuff, we have seen people who make it within a month or a year, don't be fooled by social media or society. As we all know, Dangote isn't passionate about cement neither is Akin Alabi passionate about betting, but Γ³gbeni, give me my money, I'm not working for passion.
So, I told them that if they become daddy and mummy, will they allow their children to attend school or school is still a scam? They all said they will. This isn't the first time that you will see a post on Facebook or twitter captioned "A degree in the bag - First in my family"
I told them everything they need to know. Education (in Nigeria) is an edge, you can simply make it without a degree but what you will learn in school, you can't ever learn it anywhere, even Dangote can testify. This same school is where you find your connection, the same place lot of people now start a business. If you think education is a waste, then you should drop out and start from the beginning. A business will give you the money but Education will give you the wisdom, prestige, and connection.
"But there is no work outside, but this and that" who told you there is no work. On the day we were leaving, our school principal told us something, he said "for the past 30 years, people have been shouting that there is no job outside even till today, don't be fooled, equip yourself well and you will find a good job" I don't want to mention about our government because it is a waste of time. Thinking you will get something out of this government is like applying for bedspace in OAU. But, that is where the connection comes in, so why will you refuse to be in school when you know you need the wisdom and connection. Someone said, "You are 26 and you want to do a degree, If you like it or not, in that 4 years' time, you will still be 30 years, so why not take the risk?"
I'm sure that I am not the only one who hears that the most brilliant students are not the most successful people in life (80:20) this one no be joke, I witnessed it in secondary school, the most brilliant student among us got admission last. You see all these things, apply sense to it, you can be a businesswoman or entrepreneur but don't forget to attend to your academics, it has it own impact I.e recommendation from a lecturer, connection from your fellow classmates when they remember you, and it also paves the way if you are actually intelligent.
Take extra online courses. Play games. Watch good movies (God forbid I watch Nollywood). Keep a good circle (no be everything be vibe and cruiseπ). Learn random things. Nourish your CV. Anytime I want to apply for a job and I see 3-6 years experience, I just look away and apply anyways, las las you won't call me for the interview π I'm on the verge of breaking my own record this month, applied for 10 jobs in April and this month own is almost 20, if they like, they shouldn't reason me, na person wey no get job dey apply and we won't give up ππ so, I'm gonna help all job seekers here. I have 2 contacts that post job opportunities and scholarship every day, I don't want to be the only one breaking records ππ© let's break it together.
