THERE'S LIFE OUTSIDE YOUR BUBBLE
South African Anglican archbishop and 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu once said; “Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”
This is a piece aimed at awakening compassion and love for humanity in our hearts and minds; yours and mine. There's too many ills and negativity going around in our world today. Beautiful things are slowly fading away, this beckons a much greater need for light and hope in places where it is needed.
We see a lot of things on the news and internet, they sound disturbing for a few seconds and then we go back to living our comfortable and selfish lives; our “bubble of safety”. Sometimes it would take a first hand experience for most of us to know how much people suffer daily; socially, financially, emotionally, even in the simple privileges that we take for granted, and in a lot of other ways. Life may not be fair to you, but it's a lot harsher to so many other folks. There's too many things that do not appear on the news, in fact the news will only show us less than 1% of things that go on and most times they're far from us. I've come to realize that these ills are much closer to each one of us than we really know, which is the more reason we need to be sensitive to the needs and pain of those around us.
Trust me, there is a desperate need for more good people in this world. Of course, everyone has dire needs in at least one aspect of their lives, but there's definitely something every person can give. Giving doesn't only entail financial assistance to the poor and sick people or starting an NGO; you don't need to have all the means before you can impact a life. At the very least, it could be as simple as “I have more than enough of this thing for myself and someone desperately needs it, so I give to them”, I mean, how hard can that be?. That thing could be anything, anything that can add joy to another soul, it could even be your kind words.
People who are active givers have discovered that they do not lose from doing good. Interestingly, they actually gain; in many more ways than they initially gave, in places that they themselves honestly needed. It's a basic law of the earth.
Imagine the peace you get from putting a smile on the face of a troubled heart. Now, imagine the extent of peace the world stands to enjoy if everyone was committed to this. Read Tutu's quote again.
You want a better world?, do your bit to make it a little more possible. Do the little you can. Let it become a conscious daily affair. If you have the means to do much more than little, please do not hesitate. The world needs a hero like you.
In so many ways, our governments have failed us, but you and I can make life a little easier for the next man, and if you think you can't, at least don't make it harder for anyone that did nothing to deserve it.
Love ❤ and Light 🌞
